world's biggest ddos attack that almost broke the internet

World Biggest DDos attack against Dyn DNS over 1 Tbps that almost broke the internet on Friday.

The News came on come on market that the army of millions of hacked Internet connected all smart devices almost broke the internet on Friday.

Many cyber experts consider that is the record breaking largest DDoS attack of over 1 Tbps against France host base hosting service provider OVH and the latest victim of this attack is Dyn DNS service provider.

Due to this attack many popular sites like Twitter, Netflix, PayPal are regularly disrupt across Europe and North America.

Exact detail of this attack not available right their but huge army of hijacked internet connected device could be responsible for this.

It is consider that it is done by overwhelming targeted machines with junk data traffic. In sort it is like knocking the door someone over by blasting them with a fire hose.

One reports said the Mirai bots were detected during DDos attack but not necessarily all of the traffic in the DDos against DNS. Mirai is something like malware that targets the Internet of Things devices like router, cameras, smart phones etc. and enslaves many of these compromised devices into a botnet and which is then used to conduct DDos attacks.

After that code of Mirai is available to the public.

Flashpoint says in a blog post.

"Flashpoint has confirmed that at least some of the devices used in the DynDNS attacks are DVRs, further matching the technical indicators and tactics, techniques, and procedures associated with previous known Mirai botnet attacks,"

According tho DynDNS the DDos attack started around 11:00 UTC and mainly affected the customer in the East coast of the U.S.

At current it is not clear who did this attack, but the company said the engineers are working to control the whole situation.

Internet outage map of level3:

Statements posted by Dyn:

"This attack is mainly impacting US East and is impacting Managed DNS customers in this region. Our Engineers are continuing to work on mitigating this issue.

Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.

Customers with questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to our Technical Support Team."

Reasons behind the Attacks:

As other online attacks, the motivation behind the attack is money. In past also attacker has shut down the websites to make the political statements.

DDos attack have also been used in crimp attempts and made easier by the advent of Bitcoin.

Attackers claimed that the next target will be the Russian government those commit alleged cyber attacks during the U.S earlier this year.

These types of attacks are more dangerous because it target the IOT devices which are growing exponentially with time. And these devices are not easy to update depends on the manufacturing and nearly impossible to secure.

Developers of IOT give majority of performance and usability instead of its security measure and encryption mechanisms, that the reason these devices are easy to hacked and widely became the part of DDos botnets used in cyber attacks. At last IOT botnets like Mirai are growing rapidly that is the biggest challenge and it not easy to stop them.
